Don't cha just hate....

So I am on page 12 of this book I am reading, and the sentence reads like this:

"This latest bout of karmic deserts was being served up by Harold Grader, her up-until-now friendly local banker, who'd apparently decided that loaning her more money to maintain and upgrade her hotel would be throwing good money after bad."

I am pretty sure, the appropriate word is desserts not deserts. I've read the paragraph with both words, and desserts works better every time.  What is a karmic desert?  Where is this so called desert, so I can avoid going there?
